Wester Ross Marine Protected Area

Following a long period of campaigning by local communities and fisherman, the Wester Ross MPA was legally designated in March 2016. The Summer Isles and the southern coast of the Coigach peninsula form a major part of the MPA.

The MPA is about protecting the marine environment through sustainable management of our seas. This includes the prohibition of the most destructive methods of fishing.

Sea Change is a local group within Wester Ross undertaking regular surveys to monitor the seabed and hopefully chart the recovery of threatened habitats and marine species. Most of this work is done by volunteers. Sea Change is also a member of the Blue Hope Alliance, a wider coalition of groups with similar aims.
